Eye Drop Administration Nursing | Instill Eye Drops Punctal Occlusion for Glaucoma
Learn about: administering eye drops nursing demonstration to a patient along with how to perform punctal occlusion in patients who take glaucoma medications. As a nurse, you will be required to instill eye drops correctly into a patient’s eye or eyes.
When giving eye drops to a patient it is important to instill the eye drop medication into the conjunctival sac (not the eyeball/cornea). In addition, the nurse will want to make sure the patient is positioned correctly with the head tilted back and the patient is looking up at the ceiling.
In patients with glaucoma, it is may be necessary to perform punctal occlusion with the index finger after administering the eye drops. This is performed to decrease the amount of medication absorbed through the nasolacrimnal duct. This will prevent the medication be absorbed by the systemic circulation.
